A downloadable game for Windows

Chapter 1 of the long anticipated [citation needed] visual novel 'A School for SHMUPs' is now available after five years of tormented and delayed development.

When a human boy is admitted to a prestigious school that is otherwise exclusively for SHMUPs, he must learn to cope with a shift in his reality. SHMUPs are real, they have wants, needs, emotions and goals. They're just like you and me! What awaits in your first year at Shmuppington Academy?

A tale as old as time, this is just the first exciting chapter of this story. Will there be a chapter two? Lets be honest, probably not, that's what happens when a developer underestimates the effort in making a visual novel. And, in this case, a visual novel with fully 3D characters, animations, 3D backgrounds, branching story and choices that stay with you to the end of the game.

Please enjoy this terrible tale of cosmic horror, murder, friendship, love and schoolwork.

I enjoyed both the humor and the eldritch terror engendered by giving serious consideration to how, exactly, these SHMUPs exist at all. Despite being more of a prologue than anything else, it feels like a solid introduction to this intriguing and more-than-a-little-disturbing world, and I appreciate how the MC's sheer inability to comprehend... anything that's happening to him creates tension without overplaying it in the way a lot of horror/deconstructionist VNs often do. I'm looking forward to more retro arcade references and spending more time at Shmuppington Academy, which at first glance sounds like a school for something else entirely, and I'm already anticipating poor, friendly B-Type's horrific death.
